Milk and Soda Kiosk Whale Beach

With Summer hard on our heals and in order to bring you all the latest from paradise, I've been doing a bit of research on Northern Beaches Kid friendly cafes.
As many of these establishments are located next to the most stunning beaches and waterways in the world, I've been judging these cafes on the strength of their egg and bacon roll.
The lovely Milk and Soda Kiosk at Whale Beach has come up trumps.  It's the best I've had so far.  It's amazing the variations one can achieve, with the humble egg and bacon roll and Milk and Soda have nailed it.  Differentiating it from the others, was the beautiful seeded bread and the fabulous tomato relish.

If the egg and bacon roll is not your thing, fear not.  The menu is comprehensive and interesting.  Perhaps try the Avocado Smash with poached eggs, fetta, walnuts, almonds and roquette.  You can see that here on their Facebook page.

The fish and chips at lunch, also come highly recommended.

What I also love about Milk and Soda Kiosk, apart from the cute sunny beach side location and the menu, is their dedication to vintage styling.  Think old ladders, suitcases for toys and school benches and desks for dining on.  The coffee is also fab.  I am still recovering from some of the excuses for coffee we were served up in France recently and let me assure you, the coffee at Milk and Soda was a welcome relief.

Order at the window and dine in, or take your package over to the beach and have a picnic.    Either way, this is living and you are guaranteed to enjoy it.  For all you need to know about a day out in paradise, head to the bottom of this post for all the details on Milk and Soda Kiosk at Whale Beach..

So here's what you'll need to know:

Location: 24 The Strand Whale Beach. Turn right onto Whale Beach Road from Barrenjoey Rd Avalon and follow it down toward the beach.

Distance from Sydney CBD: 42km from central Sydney and about 59 minutes from town by car, via the Wakehurst Pwy.

Phone: 0488 085 865. No reservations necessary.

Open: For breakfast and lunch Wednesday - Sunday.  8am-3pm. For the December/Jan Holiday Season, the kiosk will be open 7 days, closing around 7 or 8 pm, as demand dictates.  Other times of the year the kiosk is closed Monday and Tuesday.  Check for any changes to opening times in the deep dark depths of Winter.

The vibe: Sunny, cute, casual alfresco.

Restaurant and Bar: Really good fresh modern food and great coffee.  Alcohol service starting soon.   Choice of 2 beers, 2 white wines and a cider.

Kid's Menu: Not specifically, but portion sizes can be adjusted (for children only) upon request. With prices around $7-8 for a kid's potion.  They also make a few kids' offerings verbally, depending on what's in the fridge.

Highchairs: No

Parking: Ticketed parking in the adjacent council car park. Pittwater ratepayers park for free.  Like most beach car parks, it gets tight on the weekend,  So park a little up the hill and walk down, if you can't find a park right on the beach.

Public Transport: Kind of. The bus stops 700m away on Barrenjoey Road and it is a big walk up over the hill to get there.  The bus takes 1.5 hours from the Sydney CBD and can be caught behind Wynyard Station on Carrington Street, at Stand C.

Toilets: Yes one, unisex.

Shade: Yes there is an alfreco dining area, some of which is covered by large umbrellas.  There are also some tables in full sun. There is a grassy area out the front of the kiosk, shaded by palm trees.

Views: Yes, of Whale Beach.

Other attractions: Whale Beach and rock pool.  There is also a little unenclosed kids play area adjacent to the beach, towards the southern end of the beach.  My kids loved this one when they were really little.

In general: This kiosk is cutely styled, welcoming and serves fabulous fresh food in gorgeous surroundings.
