Le Train Bleu via Gare de Lyon for my 50th Birthday

An excerpt from my travel diary on a visit to France last year.

Lunched at Le Train Bleu today for my 50th birthday. A stunning Paris institution est. in 1900 as a place to eat for discerning long distance train  travellers at Gare de Lyon. Decorated lavishly in the Belle Epoch style, with gold embossed walls painted with scenes found along the various train journeys.

It was a stunning experience with very attentive service and simple elegant French food. It was something I have wanted to do for a long time and will most definitely do again.  This to me is the real Paris.

I took the travellers menu, which was the most beautifully cooked lamb with a stunning sauce all carved and plated at the table.  Just gorgeous.

This process of cheering myself up at turning 50 is working. I should have adopted this strategy at 30.

Also found a beautiful mini orchestra in the metro on the way. Had to stay and watch for a while. It moved me.

More preparations a la table.

Big demonstrations in Paris today over labour laws. Nothing new there. It would not be France without a strike or demonstration. Grid lock on the streets and a few stations closed due to violence, but it was a good excuse to walk down lunch on the way home.
