Love on a Stick

Wanna know who's the greatest love of my life?  I think you already do.  The Beach House Brats that's who.  I pretend on here that I'm a hopeless mother and in some aspects of my relationship with them, there is no pretending required.  But I do love them so very dearly and I don't think I should forget the real loves of my life on Valentines Day.

I put together this little kiddos tabelscape this afternoon with the second Beach House Brat and we had so much fun.  She ate all the fruity off cuts, whilst I foofed around with shapes and skewers.  I couldn't make it too pretty cause there's a boy involved in this little party and I'd like him to join in willingly.  These tasty little treats are going to be served up at the Beach House for afternoon tea today after the school run, but they could as easily be put into a school lunch box on the big day.

Not sure if it would end up as a squishy mess in my kiddos bag though.  They really need to stay on ice until eaten in this climate.  The rockmelon was a little harder to shape then the water melon, as it cannot be easily cut flat, but I don't think my guys will notice.  They will do just fine for my 2 under 10s.

I picked up the china so long ago, I can't remember exactly where, but it was a charity store I believe, or maybe a jumble sale.  I have wanted to use them in a shoot for ages, but the opportunity never arose until today.  Summer fruit is at it's height in Australia right now.   It's very affordable and just oozing with sun kissed happiness. The rain that you may have read about here in Oz, has caused there to be an abundant supply of all things beautiful in fruit and vegetables.

My kiddos can't get enough of the stuff, although my big boy is starting to prefer junk.  No matter how well they are trained, they always go for the cr*p if they can get their hands on it.

But not today, this is all that will be on offer.

Speaking  of an abundance of fruit, last night I made a simple dinner of figs stuffed with Danish feta and wrapped with prosciutto. I grilled them for 10 minutes and dressed with lemon infused olive oil, toasted walnuts and torn basil. There's a shot of them in my side bar Twit pics, if you are interested to see how they turned out. Man they were good. I don't usually buy figs, but we are only eating seasonally here these days, due to cost and taste. The fruit market shelves are groaning under the weight of figs at the mo. and being an adventurous cook, I decided to give them a go, swayed by their current affordability. Lets just say Mr Beach House and I are now fans of the fig.

Maybe we can work on table manners a little this arvo.  I would have thought after all the training on how to hold a knife and folk and sit properly at a table, it would be starting to sink in by now.  But no, my 9 year old is still clueless on the right way to eat.  Is anyone else out there going through this?  I am big on manners in kids.  This is such a biggy for me, but I feel like I am standing in front of a brick wall and moving my head forward and back.  Lucky this is stick food otherwise our little love fest would probably end in tears.  I guess you have to pick your battles.

Happy mid week to you all!!!!

Postscript.  School's out for the day.  The fruit sticks were presented on arrival home and the verdict was good, or at least a request to have this 'every afternoon', from the biggest Beach House Brat suggests so.  Now that would make me a great mother if I agreed to shape and skewer fruit every day.......well I can tell you I'm not that good.

  6. Very cute and healthy, Carolyn! And your dinner with the figs sounds very interesting. I have never had figs before...they come in season here in the fall and I have only heard of them used in desserts. I will have to broaden my horizons!

  12. You are so funny because I went through the same thing with my kids and I raised 3 boys and a girl. They're all grown now but when one of my sons visited me a few months ago. There he sat, at the table with both elbows on the table and his mouth close to the plate/bowl so he could just shovel it in! I was shocked but kept my mouth shut. All my hard work for naught! And they have children now so I might as well just throw in the towel since I don't see them too often and my adult children certainly didn't seem to learn anything from me. Don't mean to burst your bubble but don't count on it "sticking" with them. You're such a good Mom or Mum...I never did that fruit on a stick for my kids...of course, knowing mine...someone would have lost an eye! LOL!
P.S. Please send some of those figs to the states so I can fix that dish with the proscuitto! Yum! Thanks for sharing...I so enjoy you, your blog and the "escapades"!
