Hello Beach Dwellers
Ready for a little coastal louvre love? I have wanted to make one of these pretty for a long time now, but I've had no luck in finding any louvre doors at the Council Clean up, until now that is. Funny, but I've found 5 this time round. If you are not familiar with the "Council clean up", which appears to be an Australian only phenomenon, it's where people put their junk out on the verge to be taken away by a big truck, free of charge every six months. The Council leaves it sitting out there for about 2 weeks, which is very kind of them really. It allows junk lovers like me, to pick up anything which appeals and believe me, I am not the only one. It seems to be akin to a national sport round these parts and this time, I medalled in louvre door collection.
I decorated one, but wasn't happy with one, so I dragged her partner out and did him as well.
Shells, flowers and some island girl postcards this time, for a bit of coastal zing, but they are a great organiser idea for just about any theme.
This little creation is now sitting in my dining room. I love the way the louvres allow for objects to be attached with ease. Just a pretty peg and the trickier shells are attached with blue tack. The flowers are tied on with twine.
After I had finished playing, the blooms made it into one of my doily lanterns and now adorn the mantle. They give me a beautiful burst of Spring, as I walk through the door each day. The fragrance is amazing.
Good and bad news today. My lovely friend Lisa, took me to lunch, as I am a birthday girl this week.
I love having beautiful caring girlfriends, who are so very kind. Mr Beach House and I are doing dinner to celebrate later in the week, but as usual he will just turn up and make me laugh, as long as I book the restaurant and organise the sitter. Just the way it is I'm afraid.
The bad news today, is that some of my recipes for the cook book have ended up on the cutting room floor. Poop!!!! Mr Beach House kindly reminded me that many great acting careers have begun on the cutting room floor. Think Kevin Costner's first movie role. He was the dead guy in The Big Chill. Initially he was in it, but then they just decided to make him a memory.
The response to the cook book has ultimately been over whelming and as I put in about seven recipes when the school community was slow to submit and we need something to shoot, some of them had to go. A couple of the shots weren't great either.
Despite that, it's going to be fantastic. Lots of yummy and very doable recipes.
It's on a cyber "slow boat" to China this week, heading towards a printing press, so hopefully will be back in Australia for an October 15 launch, as planned. It can be ordered on line, so I'll have details for you on that when I know them.

DeleteFirst of all a big happy birthday to you lovely!!! I love the louvre doors, I was only raking my brain this morning trying to come up with a backdrop for my new summer nautical collection, the louvre door woudl be perfect. But I don't have one! Working as a creative director in an Ad firm for many years, I learnt to take it on the chin when some of my greatest idea ended up on the cutting room floor. Enjoy your birthday lunch.
ReplyDeleteCome to the next boot sale. I'll have lots for sale.

Hi Carolyn,
ReplyDeleteLove these doors, so beautifully adorned with so much coastal inspiration... love the shell garland too, did you make? I do love a council cleanup too!

Hi Rachel
DeleteUnfortunately no I didn't make it, it was a gift.
Carolyn
Happy birthday, Carolyn!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that some of your recipes were cut from the cooking book, but it sounds like it got a great response - I can't wait to see it available for purchase!
I love what you did with the louvre doors! We have a monthly "big trash pickup" - it's the week of the first Monday of the month, so that's always a good opportunity to drive the streets looking for what people have discarded. I haven't found any terrific finds yet, but I'm always on the lookout!
Thanks for always bringing cheer to my blog Susan.
DeleteI've been wanting to get my hands on timber shutters for our exterior window frames for months, but can't buy them without having to spend a fortune on custom made cedar. You can't seem to get them anymore, although I have recently found a company that makes them in vinyl so that will probably be longer lasting. These would have been perfect!
ReplyDeleteFunny I'm not keen on this type of shutters on windows. Love them as art though. Must be the Fracofile in me.

The shutters look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dee
DeleteBelated Happy Birthday wishes Carolyn! The shutters look fantastic, did you make the doily lantern yourself?
ReplyDeleteCas x
Thanks Cas
DeleteYes I did make it. Just glued it onto an old jar. Easy and effective.

Happy Birthday Caroline-My birthday was last week.
ReplyDeleteI'll be clebrating for a month with or without my hubby.
If he wants to join in-fine-he can. The shutters look
great paired together. The shell garland is a must have
if you live near the beach.
Happy Birthday Caroline! So sorry about that dang cutting room floor! But, next time you could be the star! I always appreciate the inspiration you share at Potpourri Friday!
ReplyDeleteVery cool! Gives me lots of ideas for my old shutter in our screened porch--sadly, for next year, since summer is about gone here in Ohio... ~Zuni
ReplyDeleteHi Carolyn,
ReplyDeleteHappy Happy Birthday to you! I have a similar story - I was innocently driving along when I saw some old shutters out by the road on a side street. My heart started pounding and I made an illegal U turn, determined to get those shutters before someone else did! I wrestled them into the back of my car, put them in our little storage area and haven't done a thing with them since. They're old and dirty and I know I need to clean and paint them, but don't have a clear idea of how to use them after that. Thanks for your ideas - The vision for My shutters is becoming a little clearer.
P.S. Found you on 'My Romantic Home'
Love your shutter, especially the flowers and starfish.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your book. sounds like you have a great attitude about it, though.
Also: Happy Birthday!
